Abia Health Workers Hail Gov Otti Over CONHESS Implementation for Local Government Staff

Health workers in Abia State have commended Governor Alex Chioma Otti for approving the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for local government health personnel across the state.

The commendation came from the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Abia State Council, which described the governor’s decision as a historic breakthrough that has ended a 12-year struggle by local government health workers seeking fair remuneration under the CONHESS framework.

In a letter dated March 10, 2026, and addressed to the governor at Government House in Umuahia, the union said the approval has restored hope, fairness and dignity to thousands of health workers providing essential healthcare services at the grassroots level across the state.

According to the union, Abia has now emerged as the first state in the South-East geopolitical zone to implement the CONHESS salary structure for local government health workers, a development it said underscores Governor Otti’s commitment to equity, justice and the welfare of health professionals.

The union further applauded the governor for what it described as remarkable progress in the health sector within a relatively short period of his administration.

It specifically highlighted the ongoing revitalisation of more than 200 Primary Health Care Centres across the state, as well as the recruitment of various cadres of health professionals in the 17 local government areas.

MHWUN also noted that the government’s policy aimed at ensuring that every political ward in the state has at least one functional Level 2 Primary Health Care facility is already improving access to quality healthcare services, particularly in rural communities.

Reaffirming its support, the union pledged continued collaboration with the state government to strengthen the health sector and enhance service delivery for residents of Abia State.

The letter of appreciation was jointly signed by the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Offor Solomon, and the State Secretary, Comrade Margaret Ekanem.
