Battle for Abia 2027: PDP Faction Raises Alarm Over Alleged APC Takeover Plot

Political tension is mounting in Abia State ahead of the 2027 governorship election, as a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over what it described as a coordinated move by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to take control of the state.
The faction, aligned with Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, made its position known through the Chairman of its Abia State Caretaker Committee, Hon. Ikpegbu Emeka Yellow, in a strongly worded statement that has sparked debate across political circles.
Yellow alleged that the APC is intensifying efforts to expand its political foothold in Abia, claiming that the ruling party at the centre is mobilising its structures and influence in a bid to wrest control of the state.
He linked the alleged push to what he described as dissatisfaction within certain quarters over the current political and developmental trajectory under the Labour Party-led administration.
Describing the situation as a pj7otential threat to democratic plurality, Yellow called on political leaders across party lines to set aside partisan differences and forge a common front.
“We call on all political leaders in Abia, irrespective of party affiliation, to rise above partisan interests and unite in defence of democracy,” he said.
The PDP chieftain also raised concerns over the activities of some former party members who have defected to the APC, alleging that they are working to undermine the existing political structure in the state. He warned that such actions, if unchecked, could distort the democratic balance.
Political analysts say the development could significantly shape the contours of the 2027 contest, noting that any successful coalition among opposition forces may alter the state’s political dynamics, particularly if multiple parties align against a common rival.
