Ikpeazu Pushes New Africa–Europe Partnership, Deepens Diplomatic Offensive in Spain

MADRID, Spain, July 21, 2026 — Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Spain, Ambassador Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has intensified Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements in Madrid, calling for a new Africa–Europe partnership anchored on industrialisation, sustainable development and mutually beneficial economic cooperation.

Ikpeazu made the call during a series of high-level diplomatic engagements in the Spanish capital, where he met with senior European and African diplomats to discuss migration, regional integration, economic development and bilateral cooperation.

The day’s engagements began with the Ambassadors’ Breakfast Meeting at the Diplomatic School in Madrid, where ambassadors and senior government officials reviewed Spain’s Africa Strategy 2025–2028 and explored frameworks for strengthening relations between Spain and African nations.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Ikpeazu held separate discussions with Spain’s Ambassador-at-Large for Global Health, Ms. Mencía Manso de Zúñiga, and Ambassador-at-Large for Migration Affairs, Ms. María del Pilar Méndez Jiménez. The talks focused on migration, public health, sustainable development and expanding strategic cooperation between Africa and Europe.

Addressing participants, the former Abia State Governor advocated a human-centred and development-focused approach to migration, arguing that the international community must address the underlying economic factors driving irregular migration rather than merely managing its consequences.

He maintained that Africa should no longer be viewed solely as a supplier of raw materials but as a continent with enormous industrial potential capable of driving global economic growth.

According to him, supporting industrial development, promoting value addition to Africa’s vast natural resources and investing in transformative economic reforms would create jobs, expand productive capacity and retain skilled professionals within the continent.

Ikpeazu also highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms as creating fresh opportunities for strategic international partnerships capable of delivering shared prosperity for Africa and Europe.

Later, the Nigerian envoy paid a courtesy visit to Morocco’s Ambassador to Spain, Ambassador Karima Benyaich, where both diplomats discussed ways of strengthening Nigeria–Morocco relations and advancing Africa’s strategic engagement with the international community.

Ambassador Benyaich reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to stronger partnerships between Africa and the rest of the world founded on equality, mutual respect and shared interests, noting that the continent should be recognised as a region of immense opportunities rather than a burden.

Their discussions covered migration, climate change, regional cooperation and expanding economic opportunities between Nigeria and Morocco.

Ikpeazu commended the growing collaboration between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and King Mohammed VI of Morocco, particularly in agriculture and the Nigeria–Morocco Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project, which he described as a landmark initiative capable of enhancing regional energy security, accelerating economic integration, promoting industrial development and strengthening commercial ties between Africa and Europe.

He reiterated that sustainable development remains the most effective long-term solution to irregular migration, stressing the need for greater investment in industries that transform Africa’s natural resources into value-added products capable of generating employment and improving livelihoods.

Both ambassadors also pledged support for initiatives aimed at discouraging unsafe migration while promoting education, vocational training, entrepreneurship and regular pathways for skilled migration.

Ikpeazu later met with Angola’s Ambassador to Spain, Ambassador Balbina Malheiros Dias da Silva, where discussions centred on deepening Nigeria–Angola cooperation, particularly in the oil and gas sector, regional economic integration and energy security.

The meeting also underscored the need for African countries to leverage their abundant natural resources to drive industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.

Speaking on Africa’s place in the evolving global order, Ikpeazu stressed that closer continental unity had become imperative amid changing geopolitical realities.

He said Africa’s collective strength lies in deeper regional cooperation, stronger strategic partnerships and a coordinated approach to advancing the continent’s interests through peace, economic integration and sustainable development.

The diplomatic engagements form part of Ambassador Ikpeazu’s ongoing outreach since assuming office in Madrid and underscore Nigeria’s commitment to economic diplomacy, stronger bilateral relations, constructive international dialogue and a foreign policy focused on sustainable development, peace and inclusive prosperity across Africa and beyond.
