Abia Unveils Rail Project, Urban Renewal Drive in Bold Infrastructure Push

The Abia State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to modern transportation, urban renewal, and sustainable housing development, unveiling a series of transformative projects anchored by the proposed Umuahia railway initiative.

At the heart of the plan is a new train station in Umuahia, which has reached an advanced stage of arrangement following engagements with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

The station, to be located adjacent to the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, is designed as a modern urban rail corridor integrated with commercial and retail activities.

Government officials say the project will stimulate economic growth and position Umuahia as a major transportation and commercial hub.

A network of access roads is also planned to ensure seamless connectivity between the station and surrounding communities.

In furtherance of its urban renewal and decongestion agenda, the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has concluded arrangements to relocate traders from the Isi Gate axis to the newly developed Relief Market at Afara.

Compensation to affected landowners has been fully settled, while key infrastructure, including perimeter fencing, has been completed. Construction of a retaining wall is ongoing.

Authorities also disclosed plans to move commercial transport operations from Okigwe Park to the ultra-modern bus terminal. Temporary measures are being put in place to accommodate traders pending the full completion of the Afara market.

Significant strides have also been recorded in the transport sector, with the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal nearing completion and ready for commissioning.

Supporting infrastructure for the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service Scheme  including charging stations, ticketing systems, improved road junctions, and strategically located bus shelters has been fully established.

Once operational, the initiatives are expected to place Umuahia among Nigeria’s leading cities with efficient and modern public transportation systems.
Beyond Umuahia, the Greater Ohafia Development Authority (GODA) has completed several projects awaiting commissioning, including critical road networks and a modern daily market aimed at boosting commerce and improving connectivity in the area.

In the housing sector, preparations have been finalized for the groundbreaking of the Federal Housing Authority Estate in Umuahia.

The project, a collaboration between the Abia State Government and the Federal Ministry of Housing, is aimed at expanding access to affordable housing and promoting sustainable urban development.

The state government contributed land and other critical support to ensure the success of the initiative, underscoring what officials described as a strong intergovernmental partnership.

Governor Alex Otti’s administration, according to officials, remains focused on delivering people-centered infrastructure that will enhance quality of life and position Abia as a model for progressive urban development in Nigeria.

Top government officials present at the briefing included the Director-General of the Greater Ohafia Development Authority, Engr. Obinna Agwu Odum; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma; and the Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Comrade Samuel Obinna Igwe.
