NRCRI Seeks Stronger Partnership with MOUAU as Akanwa Assumes Office as First Female Vice-Chancellor

The management of the National Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Umudike, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening agricultural research and innovation through strategic collaboration with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).

This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by the NRCRI management team, led by its Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Chiedozie Egesi, to the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of MOUAU, Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa.

The visit was also an opportunity to formally congratulate Professor Akanwa on her historic emergence as the 7th Vice-Chancellor of the institution the first woman to occupy the position since its establishment.

Speaking during the visit, Professor Egesi emphasized the importance of synergy between both institutions, noting that collaboration in research, development, and innovation remains critical to advancing Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

“We seek a partnership that is not only in words but one that will be productive and mutually beneficial to drive progress and benefit the community,” he stated.

He further highlighted NRCRI’s readiness to deepen existing ties with the university in areas that will enhance food security, boost agricultural productivity, and promote sustainable development.

In her response, Professor Akanwa expressed gratitude to the NRCRI team for the visit and their show of support. She underscored the importance of collective effort among research institutions and academia in addressing emerging challenges in agriculture.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that her administration would prioritize partnerships capable of delivering impactful results, adding that collaboration with NRCRI would play a vital role in achieving the university’s mandate.

The meeting marks the beginning of renewed engagement between both institutions, with stakeholders expressing optimism that the strengthened relationship will yield significant benefits for farmers, researchers, and the broader community.
