Sight for All: Anyaso’s Free Eye Outreach Transforms Lives in Bende, Reaches Children

The Chima Anyaso Foundation has deepened its impact on grassroots healthcare delivery with a high-profile five-day free eye medical outreach in Bende Local Government Area, bringing relief to thousands of residents, including a significant number of children.

The outreach, led by philanthropist and convener of the Ofuji Movement, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, began on Monday, May 4, at the Ofuji Resource Centre, Igbere Junction, and has continued to attract overwhelming participation as it progresses into its second day.

Designed to tackle preventable vision impairment, the programme offers comprehensive eye screenings, free prescription and reading glasses, as well as specialist consultations. For many beneficiaries, it marks their first access to professional eye care.

In a notable expansion of its reach, the initiative is also prioritising children, ensuring early detection of vision challenges that could affect their learning and development.

Young beneficiaries were seen undergoing eye examinations, receiving corrective lenses, and being guided on proper eye care an intervention experts say could significantly improve academic performance and overall wellbeing.

Speaking after the Day Two activities, Dr. Anyaso stressed the importance of investing in the younger generation. “Beyond caring for our elders, we made a deliberate effort to reach the heartbeat of our future our children.

“Seeing these young ones sit patiently to have their eyes checked is a reminder that leadership is not just about today, but about securing tomorrow. Every child deserves the gift of clear sight and the opportunity to see a brighter future,” he said.

The outreach is being implemented in partnership with Rebirth Ministry and the Precious Sight Foundation, effectively transforming the Ofuji Resource Centre into a temporary medical hub.

To ensure inclusivity, the foundation has provided free transportation for residents across all 13 wards of the Bende Federal Constituency.

The structured, ward-by-ward movement schedule guarantees equal access for communities including Igbere, Item, Alayi and Uzuakoli.

A spokesperson for the Ofuji Movement noted that the intervention was intentionally designed to eliminate barriers to healthcare access.

“This is about taking quality care directly to the people. No one should be denied treatment because of distance or cost,” the spokesperson said.

The initiative, which has received approval from the Abia State Government, aligns with the healthcare vision of Governor Alex Otti and underscores the role of private philanthropy in complementing public health efforts.

Coming shortly after a ₦20 million empowerment grant to Bende women and a 13-ward Lenten outreach, the eye care programme further cements Dr. Anyaso’s reputation for sustained community-focused interventions.

With activities set to conclude on Friday, May 8, the outreach is expected to restore sight, boost confidence, and open new possibilities for thousands especially children whose futures are now clearer, both in vision and in promise.
