Abia Assembly Confirms New BIR Chairman, Approves Infrastructure Financing Deal

The Abia State House of Assembly has confirmed Mr. Uchenna Elekwachi as Chairman of the Abia State Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), following a legislative screening exercise conducted during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa.

The confirmation followed what lawmakers described as a rigorous assessment process aimed at evaluating the nominee’s competence, professional capacity, expertise, and eligibility for the office in line with the Assembly’s constitutional oversight responsibilities.

After satisfying the lawmakers during the screening, Elekwachi was subsequently confirmed and directed to take a bow and leave the chamber in accordance with parliamentary tradition.

In another development, the House granted the request of the Abia State Government seeking legislative approval for the state’s participation in the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) Receivables Discounting Programme to support infrastructure financing initiatives across the state.

The Assembly also considered a matter of urgent public importance raised by the Chief Whip and member representing Umuahia South State Constituency, Hon. Emeka Obioma, over the worsening erosion menace affecting parts of his constituency.

Following deliberations, the House mandated the Ministry of Environment to urgently intervene in the affected areas alongside other erosion-prone communities across the state.

Meanwhile, the presentation of the report by the House Committee on Trade and Commerce on H.A.B. 28  a Bill for a Law to Establish the Abia State Market Safety and Protection Agency and for related matters was stepped down and deferred to a future legislative sitting.

The House later adjourned plenary to Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
