Political Earthquake in Adamawa as Fintiri Dumps PDP for APC

In a dramatic political shift that is set to reshape the landscape of Adamawa State politics, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor announced his defection on Friday during a statewide broadcast, describing the move as a strategic decision aimed at advancing the growth and development of Adamawa State. He stressed that the decision was reached after extensive consultations and was taken in the collective interest of the state.

“I did not take this decision alone,” the governor stated, revealing that members of his cabinet and other key PDP stakeholders in Adamawa had also resolved to join him in the APC.

The defection marks a significant political realignment in the state, particularly as it follows a wave of resignations from the PDP within the Adamawa State House of Assembly.

Earlier in the week, during plenary on Wednesday, Speaker Bathiya Wesley formally announced his resignation from the PDP, alongside several lawmakers.

The Speaker read out letters of resignation from himself and numerous colleagues, citing internal crises within the party at the national level as a major factor influencing their decision.

Among those who also resigned was the Deputy Speaker, Mohammed Buba Jijiwa, along with at least thirteen other members of the Assembly.

In total, about fifteen lawmakers have stepped down from the PDP. While the majority are expected to align with the APC, a few were yet to publicly declare their next political affiliation as of press time.

Political observers say the governor’s defection, coupled with the mass resignation of lawmakers, signals a major consolidation of power that could significantly alter party dominance in Adamawa State ahead of future political contests.

The development adds to the growing list of high-profile defections across the country, underscoring ongoing shifts within Nigeria’s political landscape.
