APC Chieftain Raises Alarm Over Alleged Imposition Ahead of Abia Reps Primaries

A former member of the Abia State House of Assembly and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Ikechukwu Nwabekee, has expressed concern over the conduct of the party’s forthcoming House of Representatives primaries, warning that alleged attempts to hand tickets to late entrants could destabilize the party in the state.

Nwabekee, who represented Osisioma State Constituency during his tenure in the state legislature, made his position known in a strongly worded post on his Facebook account on Thursday.

In the post, the former lawmaker accused some party leaders of sidelining loyal members who, according to him, had worked tirelessly over the years to build and strengthen the APC in Abia State.

He warned that rewarding politicians who recently joined the party at the expense of long-standing members could trigger internal discontent and weaken the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Those that have been toiling day and night in the last three years to build this party to its present lofty height, you want to dump,” Nwabekee stated, while likening the situation to the internal crises that contributed to the decline of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during its dominance in the state.

The APC stalwart further alleged that some of the aspirants being favoured were “paper tigers” who lacked the political strength to win elections for the party.

His comments are coming barely 24 hours after an APC stakeholders’ meeting in Abia State where party leaders resolved that there would be no automatic tickets for aspirants seeking elective offices.

The leadership had maintained that all aspirants must participate in the party primaries scheduled to commence on Saturday, May 16, 2027, beginning with the House of Representatives primaries.

Political observers believe the latest outburst may signal growing tension within the Abia APC as the party prepares for crucial primary elections expected to shape its fortunes ahead of the 2027 polls.
