Otti to Appointees: Stay Focused on Governance Amid 2027 Political Heat

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has cautioned political office holders against being distracted by rising political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging them to remain firmly committed to governance and the administration’s development blueprint.

The governor gave the charge on Saturday, February 28, while declaring open a two-day First Quarter Retreat for political appointees at the International Conference Centre, Ogurube-Umuahia. The retreat, organised by the Abia State Government, was themed “Accelerating Progress: Unlocking New Opportunities.”

Governor Otti acknowledged that residents of the state had begun to witness measurable improvements in their socio-economic conditions under his administration. However, he stressed that such gains must not lead to complacency, particularly as political narratives begin to dominate public discourse.

“My charge to you is to keep doing your job with assured diligence and firm commitment to the New Abia Agenda. We must stay focused,” the governor said. “However, it would amount to self-deceit to be ignorant or inattentive to political occurrences around us.”

Describing 2026 as a critical and demanding year, Otti warned that the administration must brace for distractions but remain undeterred in its pursuit of development goals.

“This will be a very busy year for all of us, and we must prepare for the journey ahead. There will be distractions, but no amount of noise, whatever the decibel, can take our attention away from the developments we want to see in our educational institutions, health ecosystem, and other critical sectors, where we plan to invest over one trillion naira in the current fiscal year,” he stated.

The governor underscored that the collective interest and long-term future of Abia State must supersede partisan considerations, adding that any factor capable of derailing agreed developmental objectives should be decisively set aside.

Having received a briefing from the retreat planning committee on the programme’s structure and objectives, Otti urged all participants to treat the exercise with utmost seriousness and engage actively in deliberations.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Emmanuel Meribeole, described the retreat as timely and strategic, coming at a pivotal moment in the state’s rebuilding process.

He noted that since assuming office, Governor Otti had embarked on deliberate reforms across key sectors of the economy, yielding visible results. Nevertheless, he warned against complacency, emphasising that sustained progress requires renewed commitment and strategic recalibration.

According to Meribeole, the theme “Accelerating Progress: Unlocking New Opportunities” challenges political office holders to undertake honest introspection, evaluate performance metrics, strengthen inter-agency collaboration, and ensure alignment with the administration’s overarching vision.

He added that the retreat also served as a platform to deepen teamwork across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), encouraging open dialogue, constructive engagement, and the adoption of innovative approaches to enhance service delivery.

The retreat featured technical presentations, policy discussions, and interactive question-and-answer sessions. It concluded on Monday with a renewed commitment by participants to drive the state’s development agenda with greater focus and coordination.
