Tragedy in Transit: Nigerian Mother Dies in UK Hours After Arriving for Son’s Graduation

Nigerian woman, Mrs. Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi (née Oluwalana/Ogundana), has died in the United Kingdom less than a day after reportedly arriving for her son’s graduation ceremony.

According to reports by PUNCH Metro, Mrs. Akinyemi, believed to be a mother of four, travelled to the UK on February 11 ahead of the ceremony scheduled for February 18.

However, tragedy struck shortly after her arrival.

Details from a fundraising appeal launched on Just-Giving indicate that she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the middle of the night, less than 20 hours after landing in the UK. She was rushed to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, where she was placed on life support.

“She suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in the middle of the night and was rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital.

After three days on life support, she was declared clinically dead,” the appeal stated.

A UK-based X (formerly Twitter) user, @DHKRULLAH, who shared the fundraising link, disclosed that Mrs. Akinyemi went into cardiac arrest on February 12, remained in a coma for three days, and was confirmed dead on February 14, 2026.

In the wake of her passing, family members and well-wishers launched a campaign to raise £20,000 to repatriate her remains to Nigeria and offset medical and funeral expenses.

As of Wednesday, £2,087 had been raised from 97 donors.

In the appeal, Mr. Adekunle Ogundana wrote: “Help us bring our sister, mother, friend and beloved home, Mrs Oluranti Olufunmilayo Esther Akinyemi.”

The family described the incident as sudden and devastating, noting that urgent financial support is required to cover outstanding medical bills in the UK and facilitate the transportation of her remains to Nigeria for burial.

The development has sparked conversations on social media about travel-related health precautions, particularly for older travellers undertaking long-haul journeys.

One user, @agu_i, advised intending travellers to remain hydrated, avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine intake, move around during long flights, and consider wearing compression socks to aid blood circulation and adjust to colder climates.

Another user, @The4thTobs, recounted a similar incident involving a woman who reportedly collapsed after arriving in the UK for childcare support, underscoring concerns about health risks associated with long-distance travel.

A third user, @iamSwagga22, called for stronger collaboration between health authorities and the aviation industry to address medical emergencies linked to air travel, suggesting the development of clearer guidelines to manage travel-related health risks.

Mrs. Akinyemi’s death has left her family, friends, and community in deep mourning, turning what was meant to be a joyful celebration of academic achievement into an unimaginable loss.
