Court Slams Ex-Acting AGF Nwabuoku with 72-Year Jail Term for ₦1.96bn Fraud Story

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, has convicted and sentenced a former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Nwabuoku, to a cumulative term of 72 years imprisonment for fraud.

The conviction followed Nwabuoku’s arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on multiple counts bordering on money laundering involving about ₦1.96 billion.

Delivering judgment, Justice Omotosho found the former top government official guilty on several counts and accordingly imposed various prison terms, which cumulatively amount to 72 years, without the option of fine.

The court held that the prosecution successfully proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that the defendant used proxy accounts to launder public funds.

Although the sentences total 72 years, they are expected to run concurrently in line with legal provisions.

Nwabuoku had earlier pleaded guilty to the charges, leading the court to convict him based on his admission and the evidence presented by the prosecution.

The ruling marks another high-profile conviction in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption drive led by the EFCC.
